Verdict: For most working grads looking for a low cost recognised MBA, and able to work independently – YES. If you need live lectures, structured cohort or guaranteed placements – no.
Who should take it? Working professionals, Government/PSU employees, self-funded individuals wanting to gain a central university degree for roughly ₹66k.
Who shouldn’t take it? Freshers wanting campus style placements, those who need to be guided by a teacher, those wanting niche specialisations.
The short answer
The IGNOU MBA (Online) programme (code: MBAOL) is a 2 year central university online MBA. As stated in their handbook, it is an AICTE approved programme. There is no entrance exam and the programme fee is much lower than most private online MBAs. However, there is no guidance. There are no weekly live lessons within the fee. Assignments and End of Term Exams follow IGNOU’s schedule. Completion is down to you.
So whilst it might not be the best quality degree, if you can complete it then this is one of the best value management degrees in India.
What you actually get
As outlined in the MBA (Online) Student Handbook & Prospectus (January 2026):
| What | Details |
|---|---|
| Programme | Master of Business Administration (Online), code MBAOL |
| Offered by | School of Management Studies, IGNOU (online MBA running since the January 2022 session) |
| Duration | Minimum 2 years, maximum 4 years |
| Structure | 28 courses, 116 credits: 20 core courses of 4 credits (80 credits), one project course MMPP-001 (8 credits), 7 specialisation courses from one area (28 credits) |
| Specialisation areas | Human Resource, Financial, Operations, Marketing, Services Management |
| Medium | English |
| Delivery | Fully online on IGNOU’s learning platform (LMS); no printed study material |
| Eligibility | Bachelor’s degree of at least 3 years with 50% marks (45% for reserved categories), no entrance test |
| Evaluation | Assignments 30%, term-end examination 70% |
Specialisation courses and the project come in semesters 3 and 4. If you leave after the first year, you can request an award of a Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDIM) from IGNOU. This is a good safeguard and few private online MBAs offer this.
Cost: the cheapest recognised MBA?
The programme fee for the MBAOL is ₹16,000 for Semester 1, 2 & 4 and ₹18,000 for Semester 3 (Total Programme Fee: ₹66,000). Additional fees apply for exams and project evaluation. Some pages will show older figures of ₹58,000 or ₹64,000. To understand why and what you’ll actually pay visit our IGNOU Online MBA Fee Guide.
Comparing with 2 private online MBAs:
| University | Programme fee | Source |
|---|---|---|
| IGNOU MBA (Online) | ₹66,000 total programme fee | IGNOU handbook (Jan 2026) and MBAOL admission page |
| LPU Online MBA | ₹50,000 per semester actual fee; ₹40,400 per semester with LPU’s 20% Student Grant, valid until 7 Nov 2026 | lpuonline.com |
| NMIMS Online MBA | ₹1,96,000 full programme | online.nmims.edu |
Even with the discount at LPU, one semester is more than half the price of the IGNOU programme. If you’re looking for the cheapest recognised MBA then this is hard to beat.
Value and recognition
IGNOU start with a strong foundation. As stated in their handbook, IGNOU was established under an Act of Parliament in 1985. It is the first Open University to gain an A++ accreditation from NAAC. It is also exempt from UGC Regulations for Distance and Online Programmes (9 August 2019 Letter & 17 March 2020 Letter). Degrees are recognised by all member institutions of the AIU and are equivalent to other Indian Universities. As stated in UGC Regulation 2020, degrees gained via distance or online are equivalent to traditional degrees.
As stated by IGNOU, the online MBA is AICTE recognised.
Placements: what IGNOU offers and what it doesn’t
Many sources will state that IGNOU do not offer placements. This isn’t true. IGNOU have created a Campus Placement Cell (CPC) to help learners find the right jobs. If you’re interested in placements then email your CV to campusplacement@ignou.ac.in. You can also check the IGNOU website for updates.
However, there are no guarantees. There is no dedicated MBA Placements Team to work on your profile and no published placement stats. We couldn’t find any official placement figures for MBAOL so we won’t include any.
Overall, this online MBA will add the most value if you already have a job. It can help you gain a management position, fulfil a promotion requirement or qualify for roles requiring a postgraduate degree. If you’re a fresher and relying on the university to find you a job then you may want to look into a programme with active placement drives. However, no online MBA can guarantee you a job.
The reality check: what it takes to finish
This is where people will succeed or fail. From the handbook:
Self-paced learning. All study resources are available on the LMS. No set schedule.
-
All assignments are compulsory. All courses (excluding project) have 1 assignment worth 30%. Online MBA students must submit their assignments on the IGNOU LMS. Hard copy submissions to study centres are not assessed.
-
Exams are scheduled by IGNOU. End of Term exams are twice a year (June & December). These are worth 70% of your marks. You will need to complete your exam form and download your hall ticket.
-
Project. You will need to upload your MMPP-001 on the LMS. You will need a guide that meets IGNOU’s criteria.
-
All deadlines are your responsibility. Online MBA students are asked to frequently check the LMS for updates on assignments, exam forms & results.
-
If you’re organised and can dedicate a consistent amount of time each week then this can be an advantage. If you’re someone who requires reminders then factor that in.
