IGNOU MBA (Online) at a glance
IGNOU's online MBA is officially called Master of Business Administration (Online), programme code MBAOL. It is offered by the School of Management Studies of Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi, and is taught entirely online through IGNOU's learning management system (LMS). IGNOU has offered the online MBA since the January 2022 session. There is no printed study material in this mode.
This page is an independent guide. We have checked each fact against IGNOU's Samarth admission portal, the MBA (Online) prospectus (January 2026) and ignou.ac.in, and we link each source so you can confirm it yourself.

MBA (Online) vs the ODL (distance) MBA
IGNOU runs the MBA in two modes. The degree is the same Master of Business Administration, but how you study and where you apply are different.

Choose the online mode if you have reliable internet and prefer studying on a laptop or phone. Choose ODL if you want printed books, Hindi medium or in-person counselling at a study centre.

You may see two totals online. Here is what each source says and which one to use.

Our resolution: we use ₹66,000. The prospectus says the admission portal is the reference for fees, and the admission portal (Samarth) shows ₹66,000. The ODL MBA on IGNOU's ODL admission portal shows the same ₹16,000 / ₹18,000 structure. The ₹58,000 figure appears to be older and has not been updated on the information site. Always check the fee on the Samarth portal on the day you apply.

Fees are paid online on the portal by debit or credit card or net banking. Applicants living outside India apply through IGNOU's foreign online-admission portal, where separate fees apply.

Eligibility
You need a bachelor's degree of at least three years with at least 50% marks, or 45% for candidates from reserved categories. There is no entrance test for the MBA (Online). Work experience is not required. The programme is designed for both fresh graduates and working people, according to IGNOU.

Admission cycle and how to apply
Admission status on 25 October 2026: registration for the July 2026 session is over on the online portal. The last date for July 2026 was extended to 13 October 2026. IGNOU had not announced dates for the January 2027 cycle when we checked. APAAR ID: the online portal says applicants have to provide a valid APAAR ID, so create yours before the next cycle opens.
Steps on the Samarth online portal
- Go to ignouiop.samarth.edu.in and click New Registration. Use your own email and mobile number; both are verified by OTP.
- Log in, choose MBA (Online) and fill in your personal and academic details, including your APAAR ID.
- Upload your photograph, signature and documents (degree and mark sheets, and a category certificate if applicable) in the format the portal asks for.
- Pay the semester fee and registration fee online, submit, and download the acknowledgement.
- Track your application on the portal. After confirmation IGNOU sends your enrolment number by email and SMS.
What is an APAAR ID?
APAAR (Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry) is the government's lifelong student ID, linked to the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC), where your credits are stored. You can create it through DigiLocker or the ABC portal using your Aadhaar details. The Samarth portal links a help page if you face problems creating it. Create the ID well before the deadline, because name or date-of-birth mismatches with your Aadhaar can take time to fix.
Keep these ready
- APAAR ID
- Graduation degree or final mark sheet, and other academic records
- Scanned photograph and signature in the size and format the portal specifies
- Category certificate, if you are applying under a reserved category
- Your own email address and mobile number for OTP verification
After the first semester you re-register for each later semester on IGNOU's re-registration portal.
Typical admission cycles
IGNOU admits students twice a year, in the January and July sessions. For July 2026, fresh admission opened on 25 May 2026 and the deadline was extended more than once before closing. Expect the January 2027 cycle to be announced on the Samarth portal and on IGNOU Regional Centre websites.

You study seven courses each semester. The 28 courses add up to 116 credits: 20 core courses of 4 credits (80), the project MMPP-001 (8 credits, counted as two courses) and 7 elective courses of 4 credits from one area (28).

Learning, assignments and exams
- All study material, lectures and assignments are on the IGNOU LMS. You need a computer or phone with internet.
- Evaluation has two parts: assignments (30%) and the term-end examination (70%).
- Assignments and the project report are uploaded on the LMS. IGNOU says a project submitted in hard copy at a study centre or Regional Centre will not be evaluated.
- Term-end exams are held in June and December. You fill in the exam form and pay the exam fee for each course you take.
- IGNOU counts about 30 hours of study per credit, so a 4-credit course means roughly 120 hours of reading, watching and assignment work.

Recognition and validity
- IGNOU is a national open university set up by an Act of Parliament in 1985.
- It was the first open university in India to receive NAAC's highest grade, A++.
- The MBA (Online) is an AICTE-recognised postgraduate degree, according to IGNOU's portal and prospectus.
- IGNOU is exempted from the UGC (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations by UGC letters dated 9 August 2019 and 17 March 2020, as stated in the prospectus. That is why you will not see IGNOU's MBA on the usual UGC-DEB entitled lists.
- IGNOU degrees are recognised by all member institutions of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and treated at par with degrees of other Indian universities.
For government jobs and higher studies, the IGNOU degree is widely accepted, but each recruiter or university sets its own eligibility rules. Check the specific notification.

Placements: what IGNOU offers
IGNOU has a Campus Placement Cell, set up in 2005, that organises placement drives and job fairs for students and alumni, and there is no placement guarantee.
IGNOU does not publish placement rates, salaries or a recruiter list for the MBA (Online), so we do not quote any. If you are already working, the degree is most useful for promotion, a move into a managerial role or eligibility for jobs that ask for an MBA.
Your Degree Certificate
After you complete all 28 courses, IGNOU awards the MBA degree. The image is a sample certificate for illustration; the degree itself is issued by the university.

Strengths
- A low fee: ₹66,000 for the whole programme, plus registration and exam fees.
- A central university set up by an Act of Parliament, NAAC A++, and an AICTE-recognised MBA.
- Up to four years to finish, which suits people with demanding jobs.
- A broad core curriculum of 20 courses before you specialise.
What to weigh
- Mostly self-study on the LMS; IGNOU does not advertise regular weekend live classes for this programme.
- Limited career services and no published placement record.
- Admission windows are fixed (January and July), and portal deadlines change, so watch for announcements.

For example, NMIMS lists ₹1,96,000 for its online MBA and LPU lists ₹1,61,600 with its current grant (both checked on 25 October 2026). Check each university's official site for current fees.
Our view: excellent value if you are self-motivated and want a recognised MBA at a low cost. If you need structured live teaching or active placement support, compare private online MBAs before deciding.
